Emigrate, immigrate, और migrate सभी शब्द लैटिन शब्द 'migrare' से लिए गए है जिसका अर्थ “to move from one direction to another” होता है। पर सुनने में समान होने के बाद भी इन तीनों शब्दों का अर्थ अलग अलग होता है।
Emigrate - leave one's own country in order to settle permanently in another (अपने देश को छोड़ कर दूसरे देश में बसना)
Thousands of Bangladeshi emigrated from Bangladesh to India after the war. (युद्ध के बाद हजारों बांग्लादेशी बांग्लादेश से भारत आ कर बस गए।)
Immigrate - come to live permanently in a foreign country (परदेश में बसना)
He immigrated to Britain with his parents in 2000 and grew up there. (वह 2000 में अपने माता-पिता के साथ ब्रिटेन में बस गया और वह बड़ा हुआ।)
Migrate - If people migrate, they travel in large numbers to a new place to live temporarily/ When an animal migrates, it travels to a different place, usually when the season changes (देशांतर गमन करना)
These birds migrate annually in search of food. (ये पक्षी भोजन की तलाश में प्रति वर्ष देशांतर गमन करते हैं।)
Now-a-days rural populations have migrated to urban areas. (आजकल ग्रामीण आबादी शहरी क्षेत्रों में स्थानांतरित गई है।)
