Proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, animal. (जो किसी विशेष व्यक्ति, स्थान या वस्तु का बोध कराता है, उसे व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा कहते है।) जबकि Common noun is a name given to every person, place, animal or thing of the same type. (ऐसे सामान्य नाम जिनसे पूरी जाति का बोध हो उसे जातिवाचक संज्ञा कहते है।)
Atul is a boy. (अतुल एक लड़का है।)
यहां Atul और boy दोनो ही Noun है। जहाँ Atul एक विशेष लड़के की ओर संकेत करता है वही boy किसी भी लड़के की ओर। यह Boy कोई भी लड़का हो सकता है, जो इस बार Atul है। इसलिए Atul - Proper noun और boy - Common noun है।
