Resolution - verb resolve का noun form है। यह Latin शब्द resolvere से लिया गया है जिसका अर्थ होता है "to loosen, undo, settle" New Year's resolution या अपने आप को बेहतर करने के लिए specific intention के reference में इसका प्रयोग 1780s से शुरू हुआ।
