Type of Phrases in English Grammar - Part 1


A phrase is one or more words that form a meaningful grammatical unit within a clause. There are five main types of phrase in English, as below.
1. Noun Phrase : can be a single noun or a group of words built around a single noun, for example:
a. Animals need water. (Animals)
b. Who ate the last sandwich? (the last sandwich)
2. Verb Phrase : consists of a main verb and its auxiliary verbs (including modals), for example:
a.We have been working since 9am. (have been working )
b.I will be going to France next week.(will be going)
3. Adjective Phrase : can be a single adjective or a group of words built around a single adjective, for example:
a. He has clever ideas. (clever)
b. It was a very big meal. (big)
