इंग्लिश में 5 तरह के sentences होते हैं -
1. Assertive sentence (साधारण वाक्य) - वे वाक्य जो कथन करते हैं या सूचना देते हैं। (A sentence that makes a statement or assertion is called an assertive or declarative sentence.)
2. Interrogative sentence (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य) - Interrogative sentence में प्रश्न पूछे जाते है. इन्हें question form भी कहते हैं। (A sentence that asks a question is called an interrogative sentence. Interrogative sentence ends with a question mark(?).)
3. Imperative sentence (आदेशसूचक वाक्य) - जिन वाक्यों से आदेश, विनय, निवेदन, सुझाव या प्रस्ताव दिया जाता है उन्हें Imperative sentence (आदेशसूचक वाक्य) कहते हैं। (A sentence that expresses a command or request is called an imperative sentence.)
4. Exclamatory sentence (विस्मयसूचक वाक्य) - जिन वाक्यों से गंभीरता, भावनाएं या उद्गार प्रकट होता है उन्हें Exclamatory sentence (विस्मयसूचक वाक्य) वाक्य कहते हैं। (A sentence that expresses strong feelings or emotions is called an exclamatory sentence.)
5. Optative sentence (इच्छासूचक वाक्य) - वे वाक्य जिनमें किसी इच्छा, शुभकामना, ईश्वर से की गई प्रार्थना एवं श्राप आदि को अभिव्यक्त करते हैं Optative sentence (इच्छासूचक वाक्य) कहलाते हैं। (The sentence which expresses a prayer, keen wish, curse etc. is called an optative sentence.)
