Attack on couples by 'khap panchayat' is illegal: SC- Namaste English

The Supreme Court on Tuesday termed as "absolutely illegal" any attack by khap panchayats or associations against adult couples opting for inter-caste marriage. The top court added if the government does not enact a law to protect such couples, the court will evolve a principle and lay down guidelines. 'Khaps' are caste or community organisations in rural areas which at times, act as quasi-judicial bodies and in the name of honour, pronounce stringent punishments based on regressive customs.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने मंगलवार को अंतर जातीय विवाह का चुनाव करने वाले वयस्क जोड़ों के खिलाफ खाप पंचायत या अन्य संघों द्वारा किसी भी हमले को "बिल्कुल अवैध" करार दिया। शीर्ष अदालत ने यह भी कहा कि अगर सरकार इस तरह के जोड़ों की सुरक्षा के लिए कानून नहीं बनाती है, तो अदालत एक नियम विकसित करेगी और दिशा-निर्देश तय करेगी। 'खाप' ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के जातीय या सामुदायिक संगठन हैं, जो कभी-कभी अर्ध-न्यायिक निकाय के रूप में कार्य करते हैं और प्रतिष्ठा के नाम पर प्रतिगामी प्रथाओं पर आधारित कठोर दंड देते हैं।
