Office of CJI is public authority under RTI, says SC- Namaste English

The Supreme Court on Wednesday holds that the office of Chief Justice of India comes within the ambit of the Right to Information Act. A five-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said the judicial independence and transparency go hand-in-hand but at the same time there has to be balance between the right to privacy and the right to information. The bench by a unanimous view upheld the Delhi High Court's 2010 judgements on appeals filed by the Supreme Court Secretary General and its Central Public Information Officer.

सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने बुधवार को कहा कि भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश का कार्यालय सूचना के अधिकार अधिनियम के दायरे में आता है। प्रधान न्यायाधीश रंजन गोगोई की अध्यक्षता वाली पांच-न्यायाधीशों की पीठ ने कहा कि न्यायिक स्वतंत्रता और पारदर्शिता साथ-साथ चलती है, लेकिन साथ ही निजता के अधिकार और सूचना के अधिकार के बीच संतुलन होना चाहिए। सुप्रीम कोर्ट के महासचिव और उसके केंद्रीय लोक सूचना अधिकारी द्वारा दायर की गई अपील पर दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट के 2010 के फैसले को सर्वसम्मति से पीठ ने कायम रखा।
