ये दो spellings (enquire और inquire) एक ही शब्द के हैं। दोनों में से किसी भी spelling का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है। Both words derive from the Old French enquerre, from a variant of the Latin inquirere, based on quaerere 'seek'.
फिर भी दोनों में traditional अंतर दिखाया जा सकता है। As a verb, enquire is to be used for general senses of 'ask/ a search for knowledge ( a variant of 'inquiry' UK mostly)' (पूछना), while inquire is reserved for uses meaning 'make a formal investigation/ an examination of facts' (औपचारिक जांच करना). जैसे -
I enquired his name. (मैंने उसका नाम पूछा।)
Could I enquire about your mother's health? (क्या मैं आपकी मां के स्वास्थ्य के बारे में पूछ सकता हूं?)
Every enquiry is very welcome. (हर पूछ्ताछ करने का बहुत स्वागत है।)
We are going to inquire into the incident. (हम इस घटना की जांच करने जा रहे हैं।)
We made inquiries of all those who were present. (हमने उन सभी की पूछताछ की जो उपस्थित थे।)
Kailash helped the police with their inquiries. (कैलाश ने पुलिस की पूछताछ में उनकी मदद की।)
