"Could" का प्रयॊग अतीत की क्षमता (past ability), संभावना (possibility) को व्यक्त करने या सुझाव और अनुरोध (suggestions and requests) करने के लिए किया जाता है।"Could" is also commonly used in conditional sentences as the conditional form of "can." जैसे :
PAST (अतीत की) -
possibility ( सम्भावना) - Extreme rain could cause to flood the city. (अत्याधिक बारिश शहर में बाढ़ का कारण बन सकती थी।)
ability (क्षमता) - Kapil could sing like a rock star by the age of 11. (कपिल 11 साल की उम्र तक एक रॉक स्टार की तरह गा सकता था।)
suggestion (सुझाव) - You could see a movie or go out to dinner. (आप फिल्म देखने या खाना खाने के लिए बाहर जा सकते थे।)
request (अनुरोध) - Could I use your laptop for a while? (क्या मैं थोड़ी देर के लिए आपका लैपटॉप का उपयोग कर सकते था?)
conditional sentences - We could go on the trip if I didn't have to work this weekend. (हम यात्रा पर जा सकते थे अगर मुझे इस सप्ताह के अंत में काम नहीं करना होता।)
हम could का प्रयॊग past में क्या संभव था (जब हम वह करने के लिए free थे) बताने के लिए भी होता है -
I could swim when I was 5 years old. (मैं तैर सकता था जब मैं 5 साल का था।)
हम अक्सर (वर्तमान में) सवाल में पूछने के लिए या किसी को कुछ करने के लिए बोलने के लिए भी could का प्रयॊग करते हैं।
Could you tell me where the bank is, please? (क्या आप मुझे बता सकते हैं बैंक कहाँ है, कृपया?)
Could you send me a catalogue, please? (क्या आप मुझे एक सूची भेज सकते हैं, कृपया?)
We use could to show that something is possible in the future, but not certain:
If we don’t hurry we could be late. (अगर हम जल्दी नहीं करते हैं, तो हमें देर हो सकती है। (Maybe we will be late)
