Semicolon (;) दो clauses के बीच में comma से ज्यादा पर full stop से थोड़ा कम separation दिखाता है। देखते हैं कैसे -
1) Semicolon list के उन items को अलग करने में helpful है जिनके बीच पहले से ही comma का use किया गया हो जैसे -
मान लीजिए मैं grocery store से लाये गए 3 items को list कर रही हूँ तो मैं इसको ऐसे लिखूंगी -
I bought apples, grapes, and pears.
पर अगर इन items को describe किया गया हो जैसे - shiny, ripe apples, small, sweet, juicy grapes, firm pears तो इस स्थिति में मैं इन clauses को अलग करने के लिए semicolon का use करूंगी -
I bought shiny, ripe apples; small, sweet, juicy grapes; and firm pears.
अगर semicolon का use नहीं किया जाए तो sentence थोड़ा confusing हो जाएगा और पढ़ने वाले के लिए को वाक्य समझने में समय लगेगा। बिना semicolon के वाक्य कुछ इस तरह दिखेगा -
I bought shiny, ripe apples, small, sweet, juicy grapes, and firm pears.
ऊपर दिए गए वाक्य में middle part थोड़ा confusing है it doesn’t give the reader many visual cues about how many items are in the list, or about which words should be grouped together.
