Seven months after declaring instant triple talaq unconstitutional, the Supreme Court (SC) today agreed to examine the constitutional validity of polygamy and 'nikah halala' in the Muslim community. While polygamy allows a Muslim man to have four wives, ‘nikah halala’ deals with the process in which a Muslim woman has to marry another person and get divorced from him before being allowed to remarry her divorced husband. The SC also today issued notices to the Centre and the Law Commission asking them to make their stance clear on the abolition of these the two practices. 

तत्काल तीन तालाक को असंवैधानिक घोषित करने के सात महीने बाद, सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने मुस्लिम समुदाय में बहुविवाह और 'निकाह हलाला' की संवैधानिक वैधता की जांच करने के लिए आज सहमति दी। जहाँ बहुविवाह एक मुस्लिम व्यक्ति को चार पत्नियां रखने की इजाज़त देता है, वहीं 'निकाह हलाला' वह प्रक्रिया है जिसमें एक मुस्लिम महिला को अपने पहले तलाकशुदा पति से दोबारा शादी करने की अनुमति मिलने से पहले किसी और व्यक्ति से शादी कर तलाक लेना पड़ता है। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने आज केंद्र और कानून आयोग को नोटिस भी जारी किए हैं कि वे इन दोनों प्रथाओं के उन्मूलन पर अपना रवैया स्पष्ट करें।
