On the eve of the first anniversary of demonetisation, former PM Manmohan Singh said the note ban and GST were hastily implemented. reiterating his views, Dr Singh called demonetisation a legalised plunder. In an interaction with a group of traders in Ahmedabad, he said, "Nowhere in the world any democracy has taken such a coercive step."

विमुद्रीकरण की पहली वर्षगांठ की पूर्व संध्या पर पूर्व प्रधान मंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा कि नोट प्रतिबंध और जीएसटी को जल्दबाजी में लागू किया गया। अपने विचारों को दोहराते हुए डॉ सिंह ने विमुद्रीकरण को एक विधि सम्मत  लूट का नाम दिया। अहमदाबाद के व्यापारियों के एक समूह के साथ बातचीत में उन्होंने कहा, "दुनिया में कहीं भी किसी भी लोकतंत्र ने कभी इस तरह के बलपूर्वक कदम नहीं उठाए हैं।"
