Arjun Erigaisi has once again come heartbreakingly close — and yet failed to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. At the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa, he reached the quarterfinals but lost to China’s Wei Yi in a rapid tiebreak.  This marks the sixth near-miss for him across two World Championship cycles, having narrowly failed to clinch a spot via the World Cup, Grand Swiss, and FIDE Circuit in previous editions.  While he remains one of India’s top-rated grandmasters (world No. 6) and is lauded for his fearless, attacking style, the elusive Candidates berth continues to slip through his fingers.
