With an eye on the upcoming assembly elections, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced free rides for women commuters in Delhi Metro trains and DTC buses to encourage them to use public transport. Earlier also Delhi government was planning to do this and also cover the losses of DMRC, DTC and cluster buses incurred as a result of it. But transport department officials said free travel in buses may not be difficult but it will be “challenging” to allow the same in metro trains. “Besides other factors like technical and financial feasibility of such a move, the persisting disagreements between Delhi and Centre may also play a crucial role in going ahead with the proposal for giving free ride to women in metro trains,” said a senior official.

आगामी विधानसभा चुनावों पर नजर रखने के साथ, दिल्ली के मुख्यमंत्री अरविंद केजरीवाल ने सोमवार को दिल्ली मेट्रो ट्रेनों और डीटीसी बसों में महिला यात्रियों के लिए मुफ्त सवारी की घोषणा की ताकि उन्हें सार्वजनिक परिवहन का उपयोग करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया जा सके। पहले भी दिल्ली सरकार ऐसा करने और इसके परिणामस्वरूप DMRC, DTC और क्लस्टर बसों पर पड़ने वाले  नुकसान को कवर करने  की योजना बना रही थी। लेकिन परिवहन विभाग के अधिकारियों ने कहा कि बसों में मुफ्त यात्रा मुश्किल नहीं हो सकती है, लेकिन मेट्रो ट्रेनों में इसे अनुमति देना "चुनौतीपूर्ण" होगा। एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने कहा, "इस तरह के कदम की तकनीकी और वित्तीय व्यवहार्यता जैसे अन्य कारकों के अलावा, दिल्ली और केंद्र के बीच जारी असहमति भी मेट्रो ट्रेनों में महिलाओं को मुफ्त सवारी देने के प्रस्ताव को आगे बढ़ाने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा सकती है।"
