A panel of Union government secretaries has recommended a review of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) to make it applicable only to “deserving sections”. The NFSA, which came into force in 2013 during the second term of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), offers subsidised foodgrains to 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population.
