In the 61-page reasoned judgment published by the in the Hadiya case, the Supreme Court on Monday held that a person's right to choose a religion and marry is an intrinsic part of their meaningful existence. Referring to Hadiya's decision to marry the person of her choice, the court stated that neither the State nor “patriarchal supremacy” can interfere with her decision. On March 8th March, the Supreme Court had revoked the Kerala High Court's verdict, in which Hadiya's marriage to a person named Shafin Jahan was annulled.
