After much ballyhoo about the proposed loan waiver scheme for farmers, Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, tabling his government's maiden budget on Thursday, announced to remit farm loans worth ₹34,000 crore. He said the loan waiver will be in effect for only those farmers who have defaulted on payments to the banks up to December 31, 2017. However, according to economists, the state’s finances might not be able to support this whole waiver envisaged by the JD(S) in its manifesto.
