Nine years after the foundation stone of Sikkim's first - and only - airport was laid, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pakyong airport today. The greenfield airport is expected to improve the connectivity to the land-locked state nestled in the Himalayas and give a boost to its tourism. The first commercial flight from Pakyong would begin from October 4, Pakyong Airport Director R Manjunatha said. Until now, Sikkim was the only state in India remaining without a functional airport.

सिक्किम के पहले और केवल हवाई अड्डे हवाई की आधारशिला रखने के नौ साल बाद,  प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने आज पाक्योंग हवाई अड्डे का उद्घाटन किया। ग्रीनफील्ड हवाई अड्डे से हिमालय में बसे भूमिबद्ध राज्य की कनेक्टिविटी में सुधार की उम्मीद है और इसके पर्यटन को बढ़ावा मिलने की भी उम्मीद है। पाक्योंग हवाई अड्डे के निदेशक आर मंजुनाथ ने कहा कि पाक्योंग से पहली  व्यवसायिक उड़ान 4 अक्टूबर से शुरू होगी। अब तक, भारत में सिक्किम एकमात्र राज्य था जो बिना किसी कार्यात्मक हवाई अड्डे के बचा हुआ था।
