Sikkim is planning to introduce ice hockey as a winter sport. Preparations are underway to establish a natural ice rink in Gnathang Valley in East Sikkim. The facility is expected to become operational by next winter. The IHAI officials said Gnathang is very feasible with good transport, land, and accommodation. The only challenge is that since it is open, a roof is needed so the ice does not melt fast, and children can play longer. Natural ice had already formed in November, and experts had termed the site “very good”, noting that Sikkim’s winter conditions allow longer playing hours compared to several other Himalayan states, he added. Ladakh-based National player and coach Gulaam Mustafa, who was part of the technical team, said Sikkim’s terrain and climate closely resemble early-stage ice hockey environments in Ladakh. This initiative is expected to open opportunities for youth participation in national-level winter sports while generating seasonal economic activity for local communities.

 सिक्किम शीतकालीन खेल के रूप में आइस हॉकी को शुरू करने की योजना बना रहा है। पूर्वी सिक्किम की ग्नाथंग घाटी में एक प्राकृतिक आइस रिंक स्थापित करने की तैयारी चल रही है। उम्मीद है कि यह सुविधा अगले सर्दियों तक चालू हो जाएगी। आईएचएआई के अधिकारियों ने बताया कि ग्नाथंग में परिवहन, जमीन और आवास की अच्छी सुविधा उपलब्ध होने के कारण यह स्थान बहुत उपयुक्त है। एकमात्र चुनौती यह है कि चूंकि यह खुला क्षेत्र है, इसलिए छत की आवश्यकता है ताकि बर्फ जल्दी न पिघले और बच्चे लंबे समय तक खेल सकें। उन्होंने आगे बताया कि नवंबर में प्राकृतिक बर्फ जम चुकी थी और विशेषज्ञों ने इस स्थान को "बहुत अच्छा" बताया था। उन्होंने कहा कि सिक्किम की शीतकालीन परिस्थितियां कई अन्य हिमालयी राज्यों की तुलना में अधिक समय तक खेलने की अनुमति देती हैं। तकनीकी टीम का हिस्सा रहे लद्दाख के राष्ट्रीय खिलाड़ी और कोच गुलाम मुस्तफा ने कहा कि सिक्किम का भूभाग और जलवायु लद्दाख में आइस हॉकी के शुरुआती चरण के वातावरण से काफी मिलते-जुलते हैं। इस पहल से राष्ट्रीय स्तर के शीतकालीन खेलों में युवाओं की भागीदारी के अवसर खुलेंगे और साथ ही स्थानीय समुदायों के लिए मौसमी आर्थिक गतिविधि भी उत्पन्न होगी।
