The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an ordinance making triple talaq a punishable offence, said Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister for law and justice.He said that inspite of the Supreme Court annulling it last year, the practice continued "unabated".The move comes after the government had failed to pass it through both houses of Parliament.The bill to criminalise talaq-e-biddat was passed by the Lok Sabha in the winter session of Parliament but got stuck in the Rajya Sabha with the opposition parties having reservations over criminal provisions in the draft law.

कानून और न्याय मंत्री रविशंकर प्रसाद ने कहा कि बुधवार को केन्द्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने एक अध्यादेश को ट्रिपल तलाक को दंडनीय अपराध बनाने के लिए मंजूरी दे दी है। उन्होंने कहा कि सुप्रीम कोर्ट द्वारा इसे पिछले साल रद्द करने के बाबजूद यह प्रथा "अबाधित" जारी रही। यह प्रस्ताव सरकार द्वारा इसे संसद के दोनों सदनों के माध्यम से पारित कराने में नाकाम रहने के बाद आया। तलाक-ए-बिदत को अपराध बनाने के लिए विधेयक लोकसभा द्वारा संसद के शीतकालीन सत्र में  पारित किया गया था। लेकिन कानून के ड्राफ्ट में विपक्षी दलों के आपराधिक प्रावधानों पर संदेह होने के साथ राज्यसभा में फंस गया था।
