Normally हम यह मान लेते हैं कि article an का use हम उन words से पहले करते हैं जो vowels से start होते हैं। और जो words consonants से start हो उनके पहले a का use करते हैं। Rule यह है कि यदि word vowel SOUND से start हो रहा है तो हम उस word से पहले an का और यदि word consonant SOUND से start हो रहा है तो a का use करेंगे। हम ऐसे ही कुछ exceptional cases को जानते हैं -
1) an unforgettable experience (unforgettable has a vowel sound इसलिए यहाँ हमने an का use किया है।)
a university (university has a yu sound जो की एक consonant है इसलिए हमने a का use किया है।)
2) an owl (owl starts with a vowel sound)
a one rupee note (यहाँ one- में o को व की तरह pronounce किया जा रहा है जो की consonant है।)
3) an honor (यहाँ h silent है। इस word को हम (h)onor pronounce करते हैं इसलिए an का use किया है।)
a horse - यहाँ horse word में h pronounce किया गया है इसलिए a का use किया है।)
4) an elephant (elephant starts with a vowel sound)
a euro (Euro is pronounced as you-roh इसलिए a का use किया है।)
5) an NGO (यहाँ N को en की तरह pronounce किया जा रहा है इसलिए an का use किया गया है।
a non-governmental organization (यहाँ N को 'न' की तरह pronounce किया है जो एक consonant sound है।)
