सामान्यतः By का अर्थ द्वारा​ के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है।
a) द्वारा (In passive voice)
I was stopped by someone. (मुझे किसी के द्वारा रोका गया।)
Raj was beaten by his elder brother. (राज अपने बड़े भाई के द्वारा पीटा गया।)
b) से - किसी वाहन से सफर करना (travel by some vehicle)
I came here by the train. (मैं यहां ट्रेन से आया।)
c) तक - (समय के साथ-केवल future indefinite tense में)
He will leave by 6 o'clock in the morning. (वह सुबह 6 बजे तक निकल जायेगा।)
We will finish it by morning. (हम सुबह तक ये खत्म कर देंगे।)
by का प्रयोग “बगल में” के sense में भी किया जाता है
I was standing by him. (मैं उसके बगल में खड़ा था।)
With
से - Perform a task with the help of something (किसी चीज का प्रयोग करके कुछ करना)
I cut the cake with a knife. (मैंने चाकू से केक काटा।)
He killed the bird with a stone. (उसने पत्थर से चिड़िया मारी।)
साथ - किसी के साथ (accompany someone or something)
I am living with my family. मैं अपने परिवार के साथ रह रहा हूँ।
We will be with you. (हम आपके साथ रहेंगे।)
लोगों को अक्सर confusion रहता है कि I cut the cake ----- a knife. इस रिक्त स्थान में with भरें या by. यहाँ तक कि बोलते समय भी इसमें बहुत ज्यादा गलतियां होती है। ध्यान रखें by used to indicate a mean or method जैसे -
Please send this package to Delhi by airmail.
I came here by train.
जबकि with का प्रयोग जब किसी instrument का प्रयोग किया जाए, उस स्थिति में करते हैं जैसे -
He cut my hair with his gold scissors.
